A good old 'Rape and Revenge' flick, who would have guessed?
I Spit On Your Grave is a low budget production about an aspiring writer who rents a cabin in the middle of nowhere, who is viciously raped by a gang of brutish thugs, and decides to get revenge. I mean, what were you expecting from a 'Rape and Revenge' film?
I Spit On Your Grave looks very gritty, and cheap. It's 40 years old and it looks it. There are some nice looking shots, but that's about it. It also sounds cheap, I had to keep turning it down when it came to the more extreme scenes as the sound was overloading my tv. I mean, the sound quality made me so sad. This is just the epitome of low budget.
The acting is pretty poor, for the main part. None of the characters felt all that believable, and I didn't care about the main character at all. I think the worst offender was the slow bad guy, I should have felt bad for him in the end, but the performance was more like he found the entire thing a little bit funny and was just as despicable or disgusting as the others. No one was helped by the horrific scripting, very little of the dialogue was realistic of people in the situations these people were in. I think I Spit On Your Grave is a film that would have worked if we skipped straight to the rape and then straight to the revenge.
The rape scene was probably the most realistic part of the film, helped by the gritty nature of the filming. I'll give the film this, I have always found this part kind of hard to watch. The men genuinely seem to find this enjoyable, and no one was holding back. But even this long sequence even has an annoying moment in harmonica man. OH MY LORD JUST SHUT UP!
And the revenge part? Well, it's nowhere near as satisfying as it should be. There's very little gore, maybe another problem with low budget films. But, the gore we do see, isn't the most convincing. The most satisfying death in the film for the viewer is when our protagonist cuts off a man's penis in the bath, which we don't see, as it's obscured by bubbles. I'll bet it's not an easy watch for men, but as a female, it was the only scene in the second half that made me even grimace slightly.
The worst part of this film, and I haven't been too complimentary so far, is the pacing. Oh boy, the pacing. Every scene seems to drag, even the rape scene, it takes forever between each rape. Which gives good old harmonica man a chance to play about 3 minutes of f**king harmonica. Weirdly, although the film drags for the entire 101 minute run time, we see the deaths and then it just kind of ends... Sigh, what a disappointment for 'the film that defined the Video Nasty genre' (yes, it actually says that on the back of the case).
I am aware there is a remake, I own it. I actually prefer the remake, it's gorier, it's more shocking, and the acting isn't half bad. But let's not mention the CGI birds, yeah?
Gotta give props to Camille Keaton though, what a daring role.
Can't really say I recommend this one. Either watch the remake, or the original Last House On The Left.
